What Are The Symptoms of Mesothelioma?

One of the greatest dangers of Mesothelioma is that symptoms rarely appear until many years after the exposure to asbestos, the result of this being that by the time symptoms have been noticed, it is often too late to do anything about the condition. This is due to the tiny fibres of asbestos essentially settling in to the body then lying dormant for many years before the effects of their presence are noticed. When the symptoms become prevalent it is often too late to treat the effects.

The most common symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma (lung and chest) include the following:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty with breathing
  • Pleural Effusion – a build-up of fluid around the lungs
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Coughing up blood (known as haemoptysis)
  • Reduced chest expansion
  • Fever or persistent sweating, particularly at night
  • A persistent, dry cough
  • Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss
  • Difficulty or soreness when swallowing (known as dysphagia)
  • An increased range of aches and pains
  • An unusually husky or hoarse voice
  • In some case sufferers may notice a slight clubbing of the fingers – when the tips of the fingers become bulbous due to a lack of oxygen reaching the body’s extremities.

The most common symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma include:

  • Pain and/or swelling of the stomach and or abdomen
  • Frequently feeling or being sick
  • An increased range of aches and pains
  • Hernias
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Abdominal distention
  • Feelings of fullness when not having eaten
  • Heart murmurs
  • Loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss
  • Fever or persistent sweating, particularly at night
  • Frequent bouts of diarrhoea or constipation

While there is currently not a cure available for either of the types of Mesothelioma, an early diagnosis can improve the prognosis and life expectancy for those suffering from the disease. On that basis, if you or someone you care for shows any of the symptoms above, it is far better to have them checked out by a doctor than to ignore them and leave time for the condition to develop further.
